xv, [17]-312p. A most unusual copy, comprising all twenty-four loose gatherings, a few stabbed for sewing but never sewed or bound, untrimmed and largely unopened. Leaf 17 torn by the binder (without loss); the prelims vertically creased; otherwise in remarkably good condition. A "clinical physician of the first order". Habershon (1825-1889) "had a high reputation, especially in abdominal diseases, which he did much to elucidate. He was the first in England to propose the operation of gastrostomy for stricture of the oesophagus, which Cooper Forster performed in 1858." The present work was his first and most important book. There are many wood engravings of limbless individuals showing them doing things with the aid of their artificial limbs. There are also great numbers of testimonial letters from individuals who have been helped by the firm's artificial limbs.

The original boards are worn about the edges, the pages show some foxing and some dampstaining, and the backstrip is mostly worn away. The title continues, "with the addition of original notes; containing also a few original and selected cases, with clinical remarks." AN EARLY TRIUMPH OF AMERICAN MEDICINE: THE FIRST BOOK ON CEREBROSPINAL MENINGITIS. Osler regarded this "American medical classic" as a book "of great importance" and one of the "treasures of American [medical] bibliography which you should all have on your shelves".
