Original Red Cloth. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 257p. A very good copy with boards which are somewhat soiled; lacks front free endpaper and is slightly worn about the extremities; some foxing, especially at the front and back. Despite the defects this is a tight, presentable copy. Loomis was a distinguished American meteorologist, mathematician, and astronomer who taught at Yale from 1860 to his death in 1889. This book is divided into four parts: Recent additions to our knowledge of the planetary system, Recent additions to our knowledge of comets, Additions to our knowledge of fixed stars and nebulae, and Progress of astronomy in the United States. Some of the sections under these chapter headings are of great interest. Such as Miss Mitchell's comet, the History of American observatories. and the Manufacture of telescopes in the United States.
