Peters (1819-1893), a pioneer American epidemiologist and apostate homeopath, wrote a number of books on cholera, this being his first. He "followed the progress of the pestilence, observing its modes of travel and spread, and was one of the most vigorous proponents of the microbe idea of causation. He wrote and spoke extensively over the country and did much to combat the old miasmatic idea." (Chambers, The Conquest of Cholera, 262-3.)
